Empathy in the Classroom: The Silent Strength of a Great Instructor

In the world of group fitness and movement-based classes, we often spotlight energy, choreography, and presence. But beneath the music and sweat, there's a less visible skill that sets great instructors apart: empathy. It's not flashy, but it changes everything. Empathy allows us to read the room, connect beyond surface-level motivation, and build trust with every individual who walks through the door.

Empathy isn’t about being overly emotional or solving everyone’s problems. It’s about being attuned and present. Can you sense when someone is holding back? Do you notice who stays behind after class, or who doesn’t make eye contact during warm-ups? These subtle cues speak volumes. When instructors pause to recognize what a participant might be feeling—without judgment—they create space for vulnerability and growth. That’s the foundation of real connection.

More importantly, empathy allows us to teach to the person, not just the movement or the exercise being demonstrated.  When we acknowledge differences in energy, comfort levels, or confidence, we shift from performance-based instruction to experience-based leadership. And that’s where people feel safe to show up fully. You don’t need to have all the answers—just the willingness to see beyond what’s on the surface.

Empathy may not always be seen—but it is always felt. In a world that praises intensity, choosing empathy is a quiet rebellion. It says: “I see you. You belong here. You’re safe to be human.” As instructors, that might be the most powerful message we can send.

Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.

I work one-on-one with instructors who want to grow beyond choreography and performance, and truly master the art of connection, cueing, and motivation. Private coaching sessions are designed to sharpen your presence, refine your teaching, and expand your impact in every class you lead.
